On Coffee and Poetry

Good morning, snowy world! I think, this morning, I love you. I do have to admit though: I’d love you a little less without this coffee. Thanks crew at The Coffee Ethic, for making this world a little more lovable, and a lot more bearable.

This morning, well, for a long time, I’ve thought about the relationship between poetry and coffee. Better said: between coffee and poets. I fancy myself a poet and have written many of my best poems sitting at various and sundry coffee shops: from The Hub and The Coffee Ethic here in 417-land, to Cafe Vita in Seattle, Intelligentsia in Chicago, Progress Coffee in Austin, and so on.

In the future, I’ll explore this relationship through the blogosphere more. But, for today, I want to leave you with the final stanza of ‘Steps’, a love song for the things that keep us all going, by Frank O’Hara, my all-time-favorite poet. Hope you enjoy:

“oh god it’s wonderful
to get out of bed
and drink too much coffee
and smoke too many cigarettes
and love you so much”
