Peet's Coffee & Tea

Deep in the Heart of 417

Late last night I returned from Austin, Texas—a city that captured my heart in such a short time. Walking down South Congress Avenue, talking to any variety of eccentric, eating cupcakes from an Airstream trailer, and shopping in the coolest local boutiques, I became quite smitten with the metropolis found deep in the heart of Texas (though, thank goodness it isn’t a thing like the rest of that state, but I digress).

Over the weekend I visited several coffee shops. One, in particular, was a little southland magic—Progress Coffee. But, driving back home to the 417, I couldn’t wait to get back to the coffee shops of Springfield, particularly The Coffee Ethic and The Hub, places I can be found at a daily basis. We are lucky here—beyond lucky—to have such great coffee just around the corner, shops that serve not only the best brew in an aesthetically pleasing space, but also shops not unlike the bar Cheers, where everyone knows your name.

There’s a saying in photography that the best camera is the one you have with you. Sure, there are cities that are bigger, more culturally active and interesting, than Springfield. But when it comes to coffee, I contend, maybe there’s a parallel. The best coffee isn’t in a shop in Seattle or Portland, in Austin or Chicago, in New York or Boston—the best coffee is the one with have with us, just down the block.
