Video intros to cupping coffee

“Cupping” is  a term used to describe the process of sampling a small amount of coffee to get a sense of its aroma and flavor.  Cupping is to coffee as tasting is to wine.

If you dive into the world of specialty coffees, you’ll hear the word “cupping” quite a bit because this is how those who do coffee for a living decide which coffees to buy and which coffees to skip.  In most cases where someone is selling you coffee, whether whole bean or brewed, they have already cupped the coffee and have a sense of the coffee’s basic flavors and aromatic elements.

Recently, The Coffee Ethic in downtown Springfield hosted a coffee cupping.  I didn’t get to attend, but some friends had a good time.  It’s my understanding that they hope to offer more in the future.

This coming Wednesday, March 25, Kaldi’s Coffee in Springfield will be hosting a coffee cupping that will be open to the public starting at 5:30 p.m.  If you want to experience cupping for yourself, you might visit Kaldi’s to take part in the event.

I found an intro to cupping coffee video tonight on YouTube that I found informative and posted below.  You might also check out the Denver, Colorado-based Kaladi Brother’s coffee channel on YouTube as they offer a 3-video series that is an in-depth look at cupping coffee and how to do it.
