Monday coffee: Mudhouse double shot Americano

It’s Double Shot Monday at the Mudhouse coffee house in downtown Springfield.  I’ve been visiting the Mudhouse the past several Mondays to get a better feel for their Americanos.  I’ve struggled to get a strong sense of the flavor of their Americanos, and today I tried something different.  I’ve noticed how it confuses baristas to make an Americano for a thermal mug — they feel like they should fill the mug versus adding the right amount of water to capture the best flavor.  So when ordering Americanos, I have begun ordering without the thermal mug, letting them create an Americano in their own way and in their own cups, and then I put it in my thermal mug after they are done.  I’ve ended up with much better flavors that way.

Today Kyle — who is a longtimer at the Mudhouse and has become one of the better known personalities at the Mudhouse — rang me up and then switched over to the espresso machine so he could make my drink.   And I have to say that it’s excellent.  It’s the first really full flavored Americano I’ve had from the Mudhouse in the past several weeks.  I don’t know whether it was Kyle or because I left the thermal mug behind, but it’s a great solid Americano.  Good job, Kyle!  Kyle has also started doing most of the roasting for the Mudhouse, and I’m enjoying some of their roasts as well, so he’s becoming pretty instrumental in my Mudhouse enjoyment.
