Homeroasting coffee primer

If you didn’t know, I roast my own coffee.  At the encouragement of a coffee friend, I jumped in a few years ago after reading through  I started off using a Whirlypop popcorn kettle on my gas grill, then graduated to a 1-pound rotisserie drum on my gas grill, and just this past Christmas, bought a Behmor drum roaster (that I haven’t opened yet due to a deal with my wife that revolves around cleaning out certain parts of our house).  I love homeroasting, and although I’ll buy other coffees — I just bought a 1/2 pound of Best of Africa Blend at the Mudhouse this week to sample — I’ll probably homeroast for a long time to come.  It’s a fun hobby with an active online community, and I’m enjoying myself so far.  I hope to post more about homeroasting here in the future.

roastingrevolutionThanks to the Twitter feed of Brent at, I discovered a post today over at Roasting Revolution titled the Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Home Roasting Coffee.  A quick peruse shows this to be a good bare bone primer on the “why” and “how” of home roasting your coffee.  One thing I did notice is that they left out drum roasting under the Roasting Methods section.  Besides that, it’s a good quick start guide.  If you’re interested in homeroasting, Roasting Revolution has several articles on the topic and tools and supplies you can purchase online, but I also I strongly encourage you to visit and read through their tutorials as well.
